NOTE: |
Prior to installing the cylinder head onto the engine block, the intake manifold must be installed onto the cylinder head. |
NOTE: |
If removed, install the intake manifold to the cylinder head: |
- Clean all gasket surfaces.
- Install NEW intake manifold gasket seals (1).
- Install the intake manifold to the cylinder head and tighten the five bolts (1 and 2) to the proper
- Install the intake manifold silencer cover and tighten the four screws (1) to the proper
- Install the throttle body support bracket (2) with the nut (1) and bolt (3) tightened to the proper
- Position the foam insulator over the coolant transfer tube.
NOTE: Apply 3–5 dabs of RTV to the foam insulator where it makes contact with the coolant transfer tube prior to setting the foam insulator in position. This will aid in holding the insulator in the proper position while installing the cylinder head on the engine block.
CAUTION: The cylinder head bolts are tightened using a torque plus angle procedure. The bolts must be examined BEFORE reuse. If the threads are necked down the bolts must be replaced.
- Check the cylinder head bolts for necking by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale (2) the bolt must be replaced.
NOTE: Ensure cylinder head bolt holes in the block are clean, dry (free of residual oil or coolant), and threads are not damaged.
- Install the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) oil supply filter (1) in the engine block.
- Clean the cylinder head sealing surfaces with isopropyl alcohol in preparation for sealant application.
CAUTION: Engine assembly requires the use of a unique sealant that is compatible with engine oil. Using a sealant other than Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive may result in engine fluid leakage.
CAUTION: Following the application of Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive to the gasket surfaces, the components must be assembled within 10 minutes and the attaching fasteners must be tightened to specification within the next 10 minutes. Prolonged exposure to the air prior to assembly may result in engine fluid leakage.
- Place two pea size dots of Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive (1) on the cylinder block as shown.
- Position the new cylinder head gasket (2) on the engine block with the part number facing up. Ensure gasket is seated over the locating dowels (1) in the block.
- Place two pea size dots of Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive (3) on the cylinder head gasket as shown.
- Position the cylinder head onto the engine block.
NOTE: Make sure the foam pad is not out of position. Inspect the positioning of the pad from below to make sure that no part of the pad is between the cylinder head and the engine block surface.
- Lubricate the cylinder head bolt threads with clean engine oil and install all the cylinder head bolts finger tight.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown, following this 4 step torque plus angle method. Tighten according to the following torque values:
- Step 1: All to 10 N·m (7 ft. lbs.)
- Step 2: All to 16 N·m (12 ft. lbs.)
- Step 3: All to 35 N·m (26 ft. lbs.)
- Step 4: All an additional 160° ± 2° Do not use a torque wrench for this step.
NOTE: If the hydraulic lash adjusters are being reused, install them into their original locations.
- Install the hydraulic lash adjusters (1).
- Apply clean engine oil to the valve tips and the lash adjuster pivot balls.
Install the rocker arms (1).NOTE: If the rocker arms are being reused, reassemble them into their original locations.
- Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft journals.
- Install the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA)
- Install the timing chain guide (1) with three bolts (2) tightened to the proper
- Install the tensioner arm (4) with the bushing and bolt (3) tightened to the proper
- Install the timing chain, tensioner and engine timing cover
- Install the exhaust manifold
- Install the cylinder head cover and ignition coils .
- Install the thermostat and vacuum pump
- Connect and lock the four fuel injector wire harness connectors (4).
- Connect and lock the four VVAA solenoid wire harness connectors (3).
- Connect and lock the purge solenoid wire harness connector (1).
- Engage the two wire harness retainers (3) to the intake manifold.
- Connect the brake booster hose (1) to the intake manifold, if equipped.
- Insert the NVH foam pad insulator (3) over the fuel rail.
- Connect the fuel line (1) to the fuel rail.
- Connect the purge vapor line (2) to the purge solenoid.
- Connect the throttle body wire harness connector (1) and install the wire harness retainer (3) to the throttle body (2).
- Install the intake manifold lower bracket (3) and the nuts (1) and bolt (2). Tighten the bolt (2) and nuts (1) to the proper
- Engage the two wire harness retainers (2) to the intake manifold.
- Install the MAP sensor (1)
- If removed, install the oil filter and fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level
- Install the belly pan, if equipped
- Install the transmission skid plate, if equipped
- Install the air cleaner body
- Install the clean air hose and engine cover (Refer to 09 - Engine/Air Intake System/HOSE, Clean Air/Installation).
- Fill the cooling system
- Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
- Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Check cooling system for correct fluid level
NOTE: |
The Cam/Crank Variation Relearn procedure must be performed using the scan tool anytime there has been a repair/replacement made to a powertrain system, for example: flywheel, valvetrain, camshaft and/or crankshaft sensors or components |
